Good morning,

As you prepare the final presentation, I will update you with how we will make it:

Guest critics

We will have 3 academics from the university of Fez in Morocco that work on similar themes.

Presentation

All the drawings will be on A1 portrait boards, there is no limit on the number of boards (but not exceed):

1 board where you will collect all the analysis/layer (collect your drawings, exercise n.2). Here you can include also info, analysis and pictures about Metamorphosis (you can include also the exercise n.3)
1 board with the final map and the location of the site for the relocation (the one that is ready)

The other boards are free, but I can give you just a little advic:

Present the evolution of your work: location, strategy, masterplan, houses typologies, architecture definition
Mix different drawings in each board (for example, don’t collect all the views in a separate board at the end of the presentation, but use the view to explain your idea during the presentation, or mix plans with sections
If you like, images can be on separate boards and on different format and placed among the A1 boards
Images should be large and drawing readable.
I will send you in the next days a very simple format for the boards with the course title, students’ name and title of your project, in a way to have a more homogenic presentation. You can start to work on the A1 and then add the title.

Models

1:1000 model. Remember to include also all the elements of the landscape (water, rivers, canals, agricultural fields, etc.).
1:200/1:100 as you prefer, of a cluster of houses, abstract with not so much architectural details.

Time and place

Dear all,

Next week (20/5) we will make a mid-term review. It is a crucial moment of the course and of your work. The objective of the mid-term review is to evaluate the evolution of the design of all the groups and your ideas. Moreover, I will be missing on the 27-28 because I have to travel abroad, so it will be important to reach a good level for the proposal before my departure.

During your presentation, you have to tackle all the issues that we have discussed until now:

Location of the settlement
Relationships between the old village and the new
Integration of the settlement with the existing territorial system (topography, roads, rivers, agriculture, etc.)
Dimensions of the village
Idea for the spatial distribution of the proposed urban system
Idea for how this community will work
Principle of aggregations of the housing units (study of the space in-between)
Idea for public and intermediate spaces
Solution of how to face future flooding
Scenarios of future flooding

Requested drawings (hand-drawing, sketches or cad):

Cartography (exercise 3) with location of the new settlement
Principles of spatial organization (1:5000) – use the maps that you made during the territorial analysis
Plan of the settlements (1:5000) – we need to see the surrounding
Plan of the settlements (1:2000) – we need to see the village
Not required, only if you need: plan of a portion of the settlement (1:500) where you will show roofs, garden, external uses
Sections (at different scale, according to your proposal)
Housing typologies (dimension, black walls and openings are enough)
A 3D-model with volumes
Any other material like sketches that you may have on notebooks or paper

Mode of presentation:

The presentation will be on Tuesday 20/6 at 18:00. Please be there.
The presentation will be virtual (.pdf), so please scan of take pictures of all your drawings

Bring with you printed of hand-drawing plans and sections for tutorials that can be done when the presentation will finish or on Wednesday

For Tuesday 29th, accordingly to what we discuss during our last class, you have to work on:

Two printed map (1:5000 and 1:20000) on A2 that includes streets., plots, canals and everything else you may need for the location or locations that you have chosen for the relocation. This drawing is based on the material that you have collected during the first part of the course. It is important to have drawings and not aerial pictures taken from satellite application.
Your proposal on tracing paper for both the scale, of course with different information. Bring more tracing paper with you.
Any other material like sketches that you may have on notebooks or paper.
I think that everything can fit on paper dimension A2.

So you have to present:

Dear all,

You will work in group of 2 for the exercise about mapping, the same group that will work on the project.

You have to prepare an A1 portrait drawing, that will include the final map and any other image/drawing/diagram that you would like to include, following the example that we discussed in class. Please note that the A1 won't be a collection of drawings, but it will be one image that will include various elements.

At the same time, you need to have all the layers of the analysis separated on different drawings.

The scope of the mapping is to understand territorial dynamics and landscape elements, and to decide where the relocation of the village can take place.

Exercise 2 - Housing Typologies of Metamorfosi

For the Exercise 2, you must submit the following material:

1) a figure/background map of the village in black and the one that you surveyed in red

2) plot with the position of the house (for the house you will design the roof, you will get information from satellite maps).

3) a plan of the house with:

walls in black of the original house and red for the eventual addition
openings (without windows and doors, just a thin line)
legend for the rooms (K=kitchen, S=sitting room, BD=bedroom, D=dining room, WC=bathroom, or anything else you may need)
porch, veranda or everything else of the outdoor connected to the house
if there is a fireplace, show it in the map
Type of floor with hatches (wood, stone, mosaic or anything else)
anything else it is worth to mention

4) drawing of the front elevation with shades (the front elevation is the one with the porch and entry).

Trip to Metamorfosi on WED 26/2

Dear all

The School is occupied by students, therefore lessons won’t take place until WED 26, when the students’ association will meet again and will decide on continuing or not the occupation. Therefore, our lesson on TUE 25 won’t take place.

Notwithstanding, on WED 26 we will make our trip to Matamorfosi. We will make the trip also because I have already submitted all the paperwork, and I don't know when the bus will be available again in the incoming weeks. If you have any problems, please let me know.

Some practical information:

We will leave from Volos at 8:00, and I will communicate tomorrow or TUE where we will meet once that I have talked to the driver.
Bring with your food and water for lunch. In Metamorfosi there is a café, but I have no idea about what they can provide, so better to have with us everything we may need.
There are toilets in the building of the Cultural Association of Metamorfosi.
We will leave from Metamorfosi around 14:00, and we plan to arrive in Volos no later than 16:00.
There days are cold, so cover up yourself.
